Scar Revision – Laser Scar Revision with Alma Hybrid

Scars can develop following surgery, trauma, burns, medical procedures or acne. While scarring is a natural part of the healing process, some scars can remain raised, thickened, indented, discoloured or uneven in texture.
Hybrid Oscar uses the Alma Hybrid laser platform to support the gradual remodelling of scar tissue and improve the appearance and texture of scars. By combining fractional CO₂ laser energy with non-ablative 1570 nm laser energy, treatment can be individually tailored according to the type, depth and characteristics of the scar.
The aim is not to remove a scar completely, but to support improvements in its appearance, texture, contour and integration with the surrounding skin.

How Hybrid Oscar Works

The Alma Hybrid platform combines two complementary laser wavelengths:
 

  • Fractional CO₂ laser – creates controlled microscopic treatment zones to support resurfacing and collagen remodelling.

  • Non-ablative 1570 nm laser – delivers controlled thermal energy into the deeper layers of the skin to support collagen remodelling.
     

Depending on the scar and treatment goals, one or both wavelengths may be used.

Consultation and Assessment

Every Hybrid Oscar treatment begins with a comprehensive medical and skin assessment.
During consultation, our medical team will assess:
 

  • Scar type, depth and characteristics

  • Skin type and pigmentation risk

  • Scar location and surrounding tissue

  • Previous treatments

  • Medical history and medications

  • Healing capacity

  • History of abnormal scarring

  • Treatment goals and downtime preferences
     

This assessment helps determine whether laser scar revision is appropriate and which treatment approach may be most suitable.
In some cases, a combination of treatments or a staged approach may be recommended rather than laser treatment alone.

What to Expect During Treatment

Prior to treatment, a topical anaesthetic or other suitable numbing method may be used depending on the size and location of the scar and the treatment intensity required.
The laser is delivered in a controlled fractional pattern across the scar and, where appropriate, the surrounding skin. Treating the area around the scar can help support a more gradual transition between scarred and unaffected skin.
Depending on the individual treatment plan, the CO₂ and 1570 nm wavelengths may be used individually or in combination.
Treatment duration varies according to the number, size and complexity of the scars. Many treatment sessions can be completed within approximately 15–45 minutes.

Downtime and Recovery

Recovery varies according to treatment intensity, scar characteristics and the area treated.
Temporary effects may include:
 

  • Redness and swelling

  • Warmth or sensitivity

  • Temporary darkening or lightening of the treated area

  • Mild crusting or flaking

  • Temporary dryness
     

Recovery can range from several days to approximately one week or longer following more intensive treatment.
Your clinician will provide specific post-treatment instructions to support healing and help minimise the risk of complications, including pigmentary changes.
Collagen remodelling continues progressively over the weeks and months following treatment.

Results and Treatment Course

Scar revision is generally a gradual process rather than a single-treatment correction.
Depending on the type of scar, treatment may support improvements in:
 

  • Scar texture

  • Surface smoothness

  • The appearance of scar depth

  • Scar contour and pliability

  • The appearance of uneven pigmentation

  • The transition between scarred and surrounding skin
     

A series of treatments is commonly considered for scar revision, with treatment intervals determined according to the scar, treatment intensity and individual healing response.
Complete scar removal is not possible. The degree of improvement varies between individuals and depends on the type, depth and characteristics of the scar.

Safety and Suitability

Hybrid Oscar is a medical laser procedure and carries risks, including:
 

  • Prolonged redness

  • Pigmentary changes

  • Infection

  • Delayed healing

  • Reactivation of herpes simplex in susceptible individuals

  • Scarring (rare)
     

Some patients may require additional assessment or may not be suitable for treatment, including those with:
 

  • Active skin infections

  • Certain pigmentary disorders

  • Recent isotretinoin use

  • A history of abnormal scarring

  • Conditions affecting wound healing

Acne Scar Treatment

Acne can leave behind scars that vary considerably in depth, shape and appearance. Some acne scars are indented, while others may appear uneven, textured or discoloured.
Hybrid Oscar can be considered for the assessment and management of certain types of acne scarring, including:
 

  • Atrophic acne scars – indented scars caused by a loss of supporting tissue.

  • Boxcar scars – wider, defined depressions with relatively distinct edges.

  • Rolling scars – shallow depressions that can create an uneven or undulating skin surface.

  • Post-acne textural irregularities – uneven skin texture that remains following active acne.
     

The Alma Hybrid platform allows treatment parameters to be adjusted according to scar depth and skin characteristics. Fractional CO₂ resurfacing can address surface texture, while the 1570 nm wavelength can provide deeper thermal stimulation to support collagen remodelling.
Not every acne scar responds in the same way to laser treatment. Deeper or tethered scars may require a combination or staged approach, and treatment suitability is determined during consultation.
